3 Things You Need to Know About Backlinks

backlinks

Despite many changes over the years, even in 2012, backlinks are still a vital part of any SEO campaign. In fact, extensive testing still shows that backlinks are THE most important part of an SEO campaign. In today’s post we’ll be looking at 3 advanced back linking concepts, what they actually are, and how you can use them to outrank your competition!

Backlink Velocity

Firstly, what is it? Backlink velocity refers to the speed at which your site or page receives links. In other words, how many links you receive on a daily basis. So how does it impact you? Understanding backlink velocity is crucial to getting and sustaining rankings. Google doesn’t just look at the number of links your site has, it looks at how consistently those links are occurring. Some content attracts a lot of links really quickly, but then the linking stops altogether. You do NOT want to be in this situation. Why?

Because Google views this kind of content as ‘flash in the pan’, relevant for a short period of time, but then not deserving of a top spot. This kind of content gets ranked fast, stays there for a short period of time, then falls to the bottom of the search results.

To get ranked for a keyword and stay there you need a consistent amount of backlinks built over time. Interestingly, the actually number of backlinks doesn’t really matter, 10, 20 50, per day, doesn’t really make a difference. What counts is, that the backlinking doesn’t just start then stop. Keep getting links consistently, and expect consistent rankings!

Backlink Acceleration

Backlink acceleration is a pretty easy one to understand. In a nutshell, it refers to an increase in the rate of backlinks being built or naturally happening to your page. So day one may be 2 new backlinks, then 4 new links, then 12, then 50 etc.

This would be an example of pretty intense backlink acceleration, and as you would imagine, reflects natural human linking behaviour when content goes viral. There’s an exponential effect, where the increase in links increases the visibility of the content, and the increase in visibility further increases the linking. When we rank new content, typically we’ll hold back on the number of links being built daily, and gradually ramp it up over time, accelerating it by around 25% then letting it plateau where we can sustain the linking. This has worked pretty well for us, and you should try it on major keywords that you target.

Backlink Diversity

Backlink Diversity is an incredibly important thing to understand, and can make or break your link building campaigns. Backlink diversity refers to the “uniqueness” of your backlink profile. As you would imagine, high authority sites typically attract a wide variety of backlinks. They don’t just have all their links from one site, or even a handful of sites. Usually there is a significant amount of domain diversity present.

Also, the class of link will usually be varied. So some links will be from blog comments, some from within articles, some social bookmarks etc. You’ll also see a varying amount of page rank and a variation in the anchor text of your links. To make things really technical, the links you receive will be spread across different hosting platforms from unique C-Class IPs and geographic locations. Ugh. Sound confusing?

Well don’t worry too much about it, all you really need to do is make sure that you are consistently getting links from new sources and not solely sticking to getting links from the same old sites. Remember, it’s all about emulating what naturally happens when people link to your content. So when considering backlink diversity, just remember that while you can do pretty well with links from just a few sites, you can definitely do better with a diverse backlink profile.
